TERMS OF INDIVIDUAL COACHING
GPYB offers mainly relationship and breakup coaching. Appointments are limited and do fill up quickly. (NOTE: All times on the schedule are New York time. If you need an appointment outside what is available because of your time zone, please let me know and we will work something out. Early morning appointments typically work for people abroad.)
Below there are links to book an appointment via on-line scheduler for phone or video coaching.
I do phone and Skype coaching with men and women. In-person one-on-one counseling is limited to women only.
Right now all of my distance counseling/coaching is via phone or video. I have a few clients who prefer to Skype and if you do, please let me know prior to the appointment so we each can test the connection.
You don’t have to be IN the US for phone counseling.
I will call you so there will be no phone charges to you. Email counseling/coaching is not an option aside from sending me a summary prior to our first meeting or short questions between appointments. However, if you want to send me your journals and receive feedback, I will do that. If you want me to help you with affirmations, I will do that via email. If you want me to help you with inventories, I will do that via email. For journals you can tell me how many pages they are and what kind of feedback you are looking for and I will give you an estimate of how much time it will take. Email coaching is one-hour minimum. I will not go into the second hour without your permission.
Before you schedule an appointment, please read the Terms and Conditions of the Coaching Policy, then send it back with your initials typed on it and an email stating you have read it and agree to it.

It is helpful, but not necessary, to have read the book before your first session. At the very least you should familiarize yourself with the topics in the book. If you want to be an on-going client, we will be working out of the book so it is imperative that you have a copy of it.
Currently, there are 5 types of Coaching/Counseling offered:
1. One-time and on-going.
This is either one-time or on-going. If one-time, please email the issues prior to the session. Please consult the Coaching Agreement for details. Fee is $69 per session. You may purchase 4 sessions at a reduced rate, please read the terms and conditions for purchasing multiple appointments on the Scheduler.
2. 8-week Breakup Program:
This is structured coaching for 8 weeks following the format of the GPYB book and doing assignments each week. I give you the assignment, you do it and email it to me or we talk about it in the one-hour telephone session each week. The sessions must be scheduled and paid for according to the coaching agreement. See below. Fee is $59 per session (this fee is for the 8-week program only). You must commit to 8 weeks and pay for 4 sessions at a time.
3. Consultations:
You can request an initial consultation so we can discuss goals, objectives, if the GPYP programs are right for you, and if so, which one. Charge is $49 for 45 minutes.
4. Email for journals/affirmations/goals/boundaries/inventories
If you are working alone or with a therapist and want feedback from me on your journals and/or affirmations, goals, boundaries, inventories, time management please email me. Let me know approximately how many pages of journals you have and I can estimate how long it will take. Email coaching is only for these specific areas although you may email me your journals once a week for feedback if you like. Minimum fee is one hour ($69) though you may purchase 4 hours at a discount ($240).
5. General Life Coaching
If you want general life coaching which includes boundaries, time management, goal setting, career coaching or other areas, this is available via phone/Skype or email.
Please read the client agreement to understand the differences in coaching sessions. If you are going to schedule a session, you MUST copy and paste the agreement into an email filled with your information and agreement and choosing the type of coaching you are requesting prior to scheduling. Appointments must be paid for at the time of scheduling via PayPal or credit card. In-person appointments can be paid for prior or at the time by cash, check or credit card.
Either cut and paste the agreement into email or ask me to send it in email. If you cut and paste just write “I am requesting coaching. I have read and I understand the following agreement.” Thank you.
Coaching Agreement
Relationship / Breakup Coaching Agreement between ___________and Susan J. Elliott, J.D., M.Ed. doing business as Getting Past Your Past Productions LLC.
1. Coaching is an on-going relationship between a coach and a person who desires coaching (“client”). There are many types of coaching including career coaching, life coaching, success coaching etc. GPYP coaching is relationship/breakup coaching, grief, working through past issues, self-care and moving on as outlined in the book “Getting Past Your Breakup: How To Turn A Devastating Loss Into The Best Thing That Ever Happened To You” by Susan J. Elliott, J.D., M.Ed. (Da Capo 2009).
The main focus of GPYB coaching/counseling is to help you heal from relationship trauma and/or breakup and change the person you are into the person you want to be. The emphasis is on relationships: past, present and future. As part of your self-care you will be assigned goal-setting work to achieve success in all areas of your life, but the main focus is on relationships and breakups.
2. Coaching options include consultations, one-time coaching, open-ended coaching, and structured 8 week coaching.
a) One-time coaching is one hour of coaching for a one-time coaching fee. Client acknowledges that scheduling one-hour of coaching does not guarantee a future coaching relationship if no time slots are available.
b) Open-ended coaching means that the relationship continues so long as the client and coach agree that it should. If the coaching goes longer than 6 weeks, 2 termination sessions are recommended. Coaching, like therapy, should not conclude abruptly. If the client chooses to terminate abruptly, the coach is not responsible nor liable for that decision. A one-time or on-going coaching client may switch to the structured 8 week program if coach and client are in agreement and there is space available.
c) Structured coaching consists of 8 weekly one-hour sessions that follow an outline and assignments are given and due each and every week. The structure is based on the GPYB book. If you are wishing for reconciliation or still in a relationship, please sign up for private counseling and not the 8 week program. If you sign up for the 8-week structured program, you agree to:
i. Schedule and pay for 2 weeks at a time;
ii. Do all assignments given;
iii. Not miss more than 2 weeks in a row. For the 8-week program to have the most benefit, should conclude between 8 and 12 weeks. Therefore, skipping more than one or two weeks is discouraged. The structured 8-week coaching will begin termination dialogue at 10 weeks even if the client chooses to remain an on-going client. If, after 8 weeks, the client wishes to continue, the client can be an on-going client after 2 weeks time has passed.
iv. The client must break for at least 2 weeks between structured and on-going coaching.
3. In GPYB coaching programs and one-on-one coaching, both parties are expected to adhere to the highest standards of civility and decorum. If the client is unhappy with the coach, the client has an obligation to put that in writing prior to the next session. If the coach decides the relationship is not beneficial to either party, the coach will inform the client of that in writing.
4. Client and coach agree to adhere to the utmost confidentiality. Client is free to discuss sessions with his or her own therapist or doctor and friends and family but neither client nor coach is allowed to record or reproduce the session in any medium. The only exception to the confidentiality agreement is if the coach is of the belief that the client may harm him or herself or others. Confidentiality is waived when a question of self-harm or harm to others is at issue.
5. Client understands that coaching is not to be used in lieu of the advice of a psychologist, psychiatrist, or attorney.
Susan J. Elliott is a former therapist and psychiatric clinician and is currently a practicing attorney licensed in the state of New York (licensed but inactive in the state of Texas and District of Columbia). However, the coaching relationship described herein does not constitute therapy, psychiatric diagnosis, or legal advice.
While the coach may impart psychological information or legal information (information is not advice), at no time is a therapist or attorney relationship assumed. Any suggestion by the coach to obtain a particular test (i.e. depression screening) or explore the possibility of medication with a doctor does not constitute a diagnosis. Any suggestion by the coach to seek out an attorney or ask an attorney about a particular situation does not constitute legal advice or legal representation. Susan J. Elliott may contact therapists or attorneys for a reference for a client. There is no consideration given or taken between Susan J. Elliott and the recommended therapist or attorney.
The Client is free to accept or reject any suggestion of obtaining outside help or any recommendation made by the coach to seek additional help.
6. Susan J. Elliott, as a coach, adheres to the professional ethics codes of both the legal and psychological professions. These include:
a) Exercising professional judgment when providing professional services;
b) Being familiar with the body of rules governing the practice of the professions in New York State;
c) Be informed of and adhere to the professional ethics of the professions;
d) Stay abreast of current issues in the health and mental health literature;
e) Critically evaluate the context, including source, application, and results, of publicized findings regarding issues;
f) Be aware of the issues concerning best practice, empirically supported treatments, and evidence based practice by taking courses, attending conferences/workshops, etc. to maintain continuing professional competence;
g) Be aware of the usual and customary practice in an area;
h) Know the boundaries of and utility of interventions chosen;
i) Know the limitations/restrictions of patient characteristics as benefiting from empirically supported treatments to determine whether the recommended treatment is applicable;
j) Make efforts to insure culturally competent practices which reflect knowledge of the impact of diversity on human behavior;
k) Adhere to the strictest standards of professional boundaries, courtesies and confidence;
l) Refer clients elsewhere if appropriate.
7. If the client is under the care of a therapist or mental health professional or psychiatrist and/or is taking psychotropic medications, he or she will inform the coach prior to the first session. If client is feeling unsafe, meaning that he or she wishes to harm him or herself or someone else, they will inform the coach.
8. Client agrees to make appointments and pay for said appointments at the time of scheduling.
9. It is imperative that the client implement the coach’s advice during the coaching relationship. If you choose to ignore the coach’s advice, you are wasting your time and money. Many clients feel resistance to new advice so this is not unusual. However, the coach and client have a responsibility to talk about it. If the coach notes the resistance or unwillingness to comply with assignments and suggestions, the coach is responsible to bring this to the client’s attention in video/phone sessions AND in writing. The client must make a best effort to comply with coaching advice. If the client remains resistant, the coach may implement termination sessions and suggest that the client seek different outside help.
10. Both parties have an obligation to show up to appointments and, if not, give sufficient notice. If the client fails to cancel within 24 hours, the coach does not refund the fee. If the coach cancels, the coach returns the fee.
Refunds given ONLY if the client cancels prior to 24 hours of appointment or if the coach cancels. There are no exceptions. Clients are encouraged to consult with the coach regarding cancellation policies and no-shows before embarking on any long-term coaching relationship.
11. Client agrees to start sessions on time and to end on time (one-hour other than consultations). Coach agrees to wait for client for 15 minutes before terminating session. Client agrees that if a session has not started within 15 minutes of a scheduled time that the session and fee are forfeited.
12. Client agrees to utilize Getting Past Your Breakup coaching services with the full understanding that Susan Elliott, GPYP Productions, their employees, volunteers and directors are in no way responsible or liable for client’s decisions, actions and outcomes. You also agree to hold Susan Elliott, GPYP Productions, free of all liability and responsibility for any adverse situations that are the direct or indirect result of a specific referral, advice given or any other actions taken while working with GPYB coaching.
13. This Agreement constitutes all the agreements between client and coach. Any amendments or changes to this agreement must be in writing.
