Getting Back Out There
Susan J. Elliott, J.D.,M.Ed. is the creator of the Getting Past Your Breakup Program and the author of the GPYB books.
She was given up to the foster care system and was adopted into an abusive, alcoholic home. Her world came crashing down when her very toxic marriage ended and she was forced to face her unresolved losses, low self-esteem, raging codependency and overwhelming attachment and abandonment issues. This led to seeking out help from a variety of sources, healing her wounds, building a new life as a single, working mother, becoming a therapist and an attorney and finding real love with the most wonderful, loving man. She has dedicated the past 25 years life to writing, recording, speaking and teaching to help others find their way from horrific heartbreak to a fabulous new life.
Her groundbreaking work on the interplay between unresolved grief and difficulty in ending relationships, has helped thousands of people let go of a bad situation and find their way to happiness after heartache. She is credited with popularizing the concept of “no contact,” and developing a wide range of substantive exercises (available in the books and the workbook) to heal the past, build a healthy present and plan for a happy future.
Though GPYB is designed to help anyone going through a breakup, she specializes in working with people with severe attachment disorders, former partners of the personality disordered and domestic violence victims.
A media commentator who has appeared on national and local (NYC) television, local, national and international radio, and has been featured in numerous publications, she holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Mount Holyoke College where she graduated with High Honors, magna cum laude, and Phi Beta Kappa; a Master of Education in Counseling Psychology from Cambridge College; and a Juris Doctor from the University of California, Berkeley.

This book has been by my side since my boyfriend and I broke up about a month and a half ago. When reading this book I know that I am not going through it alone. Each chapter has no bullsh*t
Buy this book. Buy it because you're sick and tired of feeling this way. Buy it because you know something has to change, and you sense that this all goes deeper than you realize, but the pain is so heavy that you don't even know where to start. Buy it because you appreciate the accessibility of an author who has spent her entire life building the wealth of knowledge and wisdom that is written in these pages - she learned this all herself ...
This is a great book for anyone going through a significant breakup. While the tagline to the title is a bit overly optimistic – “How to Turn a Devastating Loss into the Best Thing That Ever Happened to You” – the actual title of the book, “Getting Past Your Breakup,” is a true description of the great compassion and advice offered in this book…..
I don’t know where I heard about this book – the first days during the collapse of my marriage are all a blur. But I’m so thankful that, wherever I learned of Susan Elliott from, I gave her book a chance. Admittedly there were parts I wanted to ignore at first – no contact with someone you’ve loved and shared a life with for nearly 20 years seems impossible – but…
I bought this book after my boyfriend of seven years suddenly dumped me out of nowhere and I was devastated. I am so glad I found this book and Susan’s companion blog, YouTube videos, and Facebook support group site to help me get past my breakup. This book contains so many useful tools to enable emotional healing, and provides specific examples of common setbacks such as recycling,…..
